Stage - Theater - Arts
and The Origins of new Words

History has many surprises...

WHO - WHAT - WHERE?

We are fascinated by unusual words, where they originate from, how they evolve, their histories and how they make there way into mainstream usage. We are developing a resource here where you can also contribute where we will be tracking the origins of unusual words. A new fully fledged content management system is currently being developed for this project which we expect to launch in the next few months.

The Word Linbury

* The name Linbury was first used to describe the non-existent Linbury village depicted in The Jennings novels (a collection of humorous children's books written by Anthony Buckeridge). The word biennial refers to an event which occurs every two years.

Linbury Biennial Prize

The Linbury Biennial Prize for Stage Design was the UK's foremost award for emerging theatre designers, it provided exceptional opportunities for young designers to present their work to the public and fellow professionals while still in the early stages of their careers.

Linbury Studio Theater

The new Linbury Studio theater which is part of the Royal Opera House offers a space for experimental and independent dance and music companies. With a seating capacity of 400 the studio is well suited to its programme of educational projects, lunchtime concerts and more experimental works. The Linbury studio can also be hired for private events and can be adjusted to accommodate 400 for a standing reception, 300 for banqueting and 250 for a dinner and dance.

Since the opening many performers have been proud to demonstrate their talent to enthusiastic audiences and with the passing of time the theater is fast becoming recognised as one of the premier entertainment events in London.

The Venice Biennial

The Venice Biennial dates back to 1895 as an international art exhibition. From the 1930's the institution arranged festivals for music, film and theater.

Because of political events in 1968, the Venice Biennial discontinued its traditional activities then in 1973 and has continued even better as now includes an architecture exhibition too.
