Types of Theatre

Theatre has many forms and branches. It also has a rich history, as theatre has evolved in some form or other in all cultures and communities. The point of theatre is to convey meaning to its viewer. Any kind of performance can be considered as theatre, but since there are different forms of performances, theatre typically refers to actors performing a drama on stage.

Although theatre is a term that is used to describe various community art forms in different cultures, we will consider the western form of theatre. Theatre has evolved and various masters have established their own form of storytelling and theatre as well.

It is common knowledge that theatre played an important role in ancient Greek culture. You would not see a character wearing skate shoes in any of these! Unless the play was a modern rehashed version of a Greek play!

Theatre mainly included comedy and tragedy. There are a number of philosophies, processes and approaches to creating theatre. Every form of narrative art form like film, theatre or even graphical art has the potential to tell a story, and therefore political power. Theatre can become a highly political art form.

Today there are experimental forms of theatre that play with these dominant forms. Experimental theatre is in fact an important branch of theatre and drama today.
