WHO - WHAT - WHERE?Modern Theatre and CultureEuropean theatre evolved from ancient Greek and roman theatre. In medieval times, theatre in Europe consisted of court performances. Themes usually included re-scripted legends. As religion pervaded the continent, themes reflected religious sentiments, but this also gave rise to a more vernacular community theatre. Today, modern theatre in Europe is influenced by various political and social philosophies. Themes are varied. Experimental and sometimes controversial theatre that challenges the political and social status quo still remains on the fringes and mainstream theatre reflects politically correct themes, just as is the case with cinema. All of Europe has a rich history and tradition of theatre. A friend of mine recently went on a trip across Europe, and explored theatre in different countries. She wanted to Learn Spanish in Spain and study Spanish theatre, which she did. Theatre reflects society and culture at any given point in time. By studying the history of theatre, it is possible to draw inferences about the social structure, customs, political situation, religion and the overall culture of a place. Theatre has evolved in all cultures of the world. Many eastern cultures have highly rich forms of theatre. Theatre plays the important role of entertainment combined with critiquing society and making a point about the larger truths of life. |
